Top 10 Must-Know Tips for Healthy Hair Care
In our last post HAIRCARE 101, we talked about the foundation of healthy hair internally and specifically during wash day. But haircare is also about styling, diet, and the products used! So here's a more in depth list of what you need to care for your healthiest hair:
Hydration: Keep your hair well-hydrated by drinking water and using moisturizing shampoos and conditioners with humectants. Deep condition your hair regularly to maintain moisture
Low Manipulation: There is always going to be an element of manipulation both by the hands of whoever is styling your hair or by the weather- so your styling should be minimal to decrease damaging your tresses
Protective Styles: Use protective styles like braids, twists, or updos to minimize daily manipulation and protect your hair from environmental damage
Natural Oils: Incorporate natural & essential oils like coconut, peppermint, tea tree, jojoba, rosemary, or argan oil into your routine. These can help seal in moisture, add shine, and stimulate blood flow to the scalp
Scalp Care: A healthy scalp is essential for healthy hair. Keep your scalp clean and moisturized, do not damage the scalp skin. Scalp massages with natural oils can promote hair growth
Avoid Excessive Heat: Limit the use of heat styling tools like flat irons and curling irons, which can damage your natural hair. Opt for heatless styling methods. And be sure your hair is thoroughly moisturized and protected before adding any heat!
Regular Trims: Trimming your hair should happen every 3-4 months. I recommend more or less depending on how much manipulation your hair undergoes regularly, i.e. if you are a silk press, color, or relaxer girly than those trims would be a bit more frequent then the low heat, low manipulation girly
The Right Shampoo: When initially washing your hair, especially it's been a long time between washes or you use a lot of product on your hair, a clarifying shampoo is necessary to remove all of the buildup that is clogging your follicles and hair shaft. But Bry, that's so stripping and leaves my hair feeling dry! That's why you should follow up with a moisturizing shampoo to rehydrate your hair before you even get to the conditioner step!
Diet and Hydration: Internal Health is directly linked to how your hair grows- haircare starts from within. Consult your health care provider if you have known medical conditions/are taking medication (especially anything that effects blood flow) and be sure you are taking th enecassary vitamins/not experiencing any deficiencies!
Detangling: When doing your hair you should be detangling at every step in the process- in fact detangling is the very first step! And it should happen before, during and after your wash, leaving your with thoroughly detangled hair before styling
